“ I get so sucked into social media, I go in to check one or two things and before I know it I have looked at twenty to thirty pages of colleagues and friends “highlights” and hour later I believe that my life sucks and I have not achieved anything and I feel so depressed…”

You would be surprised at how often I hear this statement (or variations of it) from my clients…

As if day-to-day life doesn’t have enough challenges already, throw Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, Twitter, Pintrest and Tumblr into the mix and it is surprising that anyone gets anything done these days, let alone remaining focused on where you want to go in your life…

Don’t get me wrong, social media is brilliant for both personal and business purposes and I use it effectively in my business as many of us do…

So the key with social media is to use it for your purposes and not let it use you!

So how can you when your attention is being pulled towards, “I just want to see what so-and-so is up to these days?”

Well, the first step is to be 100% clear on what you really want to be do and have in your life…

You see, you must have a direction for your life otherwise you will just go around in circles and be in the same place you are five years from now and perhaps with an even stronger addiction to Social Media!

The second step is that you must have a big enough “why” – in others words, why you want what you want must be so compelling for you, that nothing has a chance of distracting you from your coveted goals…

And step three is to learn to ignore anything that doesn’t have anything to do with your goals …

So next time you are scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, ask yourself this question…

“Is what I am doing right now an important activity towards the realisation of my dreams?”

If “yes”, great, keep doing it…

If “no”, turn your back, close down the app and walk away from that activity (figuratively or literally)…

This is so simple in theory and powerful in practice; however breaking any kind of addiction does take time and effort initially…

But before long, by following these three simple steps, you will only be participating in activities that are beneficial to your happiness and fulfilment…
